The overall purpose of the Foundation for Cardiac Research
is to foster and support research in the medical sciences relating
to cardiology and cardiovascular problems. With a continuing
relative reduction in federal funding for research, the need
for research support from the Foundation becomes increasingly
important. Particular emphasis will be placed on salary support
for cardiology trainees in the area of clinically related research.
The Foundation's Medical Board, consisting of three cardiologists
who are staff members of the teaching hospitals of the University
of California, San Francisco, will award research grants and
select the individual or individuals to be supported in a given
year depending on the amount of funding which is available.
Despite advances in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease,
it still remains the number one killer in the United States.
Approximately one million individuals die with heart disease
each year. Despite a reduction in overall mortality from heart
disease, there is a rise in the number of patients who have
congestive heart failure. The Foundation has a special interest
in studying better ways of understanding and treating patients
with congestive heart failure.
Thus the Foundation has two major goals: the first is to train
young investigators who represent the future of academic cardiology
in this country, and the second is to further our knowledge,
understanding, and treatment options for patients with various
forms of heart disease, particularly congestive heart failure.
