Dr. Nelson B. Schiller is interested in the many applications of echocardiography and Doppler techniques in clinical cardiology. His research interests center around the quantitation of left ventricular function by quantitative two--dimensional echocardiography and Doppler. In collaboration with the Department of Anesthesiology, Dr. Schiller has been active in the development of transesophageal echocardiography. In collaboration with electrophysiology, the echocardiography laboratory has been involved in the development of the transponder catheter and intravascular imaging for electrophysiologic applications. In conjunction with the Department of Radiology, the echocardiography laboratory has been actively involved in the development of both magnetic resonance imaging and CT. In collaboration with nuclear cardiology, the laboratory is developing a series of noninvasively guided interventions that include exercise and pharmacologic interventions. In collaboration with his associates Doctors Elyse Foster and Rita Redberg the echocardiography laboratory is also active in research in adult congenital heart disease, three-dimensional reconstruction, echocardiographic contrast agents, transesophageal echocardiography in clinical care, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, coronary blood flow, exercise hemodynamics, heart disease in women and aging.
