Dr. Nelson B. Schiller is a cardiologist who specializes in the use of echocardiography in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. He is the founder of the UCSF Echocardiography Laboratory and the UCSF Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic. He has played an integral role in the development of many diagnostic and treatment techniques including transesophogeal echocardiography, Doppler pulmonary pressure determination, myocardial contrast perfusion and echocardiography phase imaging for ventricular coordination. In the areas of congenital heart disease, he is an expert in the treatment of mitral and aortic valve diseases and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
In collaboration with his colleagues, Schiller is involved in research in adult congenital heart disease, three-dimensional reconstruction, echocardiographic contrast agents, transesophageal echocardiography, coronary blood flow, exercise hemodynamics, myocardial perfusion, smoking-related cardiopulmonary disease and noninvasive evaluation of cardiac synchrony.
