RESEARCH IN PROGRESS:

Mechanics of the Intact Heart:

  1. Experimental studies in open chest anesthetized dogs to define the dynamic afterload that the lungs place on the heart during normal conditions and following a variety of pulmonary injuries, and how the heart responds to these changes in loading conditions. Mathematical modelling of the interaction of the cardiac and pulmonary system.
  2. Experimental and theoretical work to better define and describe the dynamic interaction between the various physiological variables that determine the heart's hemodynamic function on a beat-to-beat basis.
  3. Experimental and theoretical work to better define the relative roles of elastic, viscous, and active relaxation forces in determining the filling pressure of the left ventricle, particularly during ischemia.
  4. Theoretical and experimental studies on the relationship between global and regional performance of the heart.

Effects of Environmental Tobacco Smoke

  1. Animal studies of the effects of passive smoking on the heart, with the goal of determining the mechanisms by which secondhand smoke increase the risk of heart disease and worsens myocardial infarction.

Tobacco Control:

  1. Economic impacts of smoking and smoking regulations, especially on employers and the public sector.
  2. Activities of the tobacco industry to prevent the spread of nonsmokers' rights and strategies to deal with the industry.
