UCSF
CARDIAC ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY
AND ARRHYTHMIA SERVICE |
A Program of
the UCSF Heart and Vascular Center
|
| The UCSF
Cardiac Electrophysiology and Arrhythmia Service at UCSF Medical Center
provides consultations and referral services for patients with arrhythmias,
syncope and heart failure. We have recently expanded our faculty, opened
a newly renovated Heart Failure Device and Arrhythmia Clinic and will
soon open a new state-of-the art cardiac electrophysiology laboratory
and suite. Our physicians and staff are committed to providing timely
service and open communication to help care for patients with these
complex conditions. |
SERVICES
- Diagnosis and
management of arrhythmias
- Ablation for SVT,
atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter and ventricular tachycardia
- Risk stratification
of patients at risk for sudden cardiac death
- Implantation and
follow-up of pacemakers and ICDs
- Resynchronization
(biventricular pacing) therapy for heart failure
- Syncope treatment
- Treatment for
genetic disorders that cause arrhythmias such as long QT syndrome
or ARVD
- Non-invasive and
invasive EP testing

In
addition to our basic electrophysiology services, we provide several
specialized clinics:
Atrial Arrhythmia
Clinic:
The program provides comprehensive care for patients with atrial fibrillation,
flutter and atrial tachycardias. We also provide consultations for patients
who may benefit from novel approaches. Physicians in the UCSF Arrhythmia
and Electrophysiology Service developed many of the techniques used in
curing patients with atrial fibrillation and were among the first in
the world to perform curative catheter ablation for AF. Ongoing basic
and clinical research at UCSF continually improves our understanding
of this disease, resulting in tangible therapeutic advances.
Heart Failure Device and Arrhythmia Clinic:
This clinic provides integrated consultation services for patients
with heart failure who may benefit from cardiac resynchronization (biventricular
pacing) therapy or defibrillator implantation, including device follow-up
for these patients. UCSF physicians were among the first in the world
to implant biventricular pacemakers to treat patients with congestive
heart failure. We continue to provide advanced heart failure therapies
and to develop new approaches to resynchronization through ongoing research.
The clinic is integrated with the UCSF Heart Failure Clinic and patients
have access to other treatments such as heart transplantation, drug trials
and implanted assist devices.
Genetic Arrhythmia
Clinic:
Our team cares for patients with inherited genetic disorders resulting
in arrhythmias. These include patients with the long QT syndrome, arrhythmogenic
right ventricular dysplasia, Brugada's syndrome and idiopathic ventricular
fibrillation, among others. Genetic testing, genetic counseling and family
screening are available through sister UCSF Medical Center programs.
Our program is the cornerstone for a number of ongoing UCSF studies on
these conditions.

For
Physicians To Refer
A Patient To UCSF Cardiac Electrophysiology And Arrhythmia Service,
Please Call: 415/476-UCEP [8237]
Fax: 415/476-6260
|
Upon referral, our electrophysiology team will
contact your patient and arrange for consultation. For long distance patients,
consultation and scheduling can be performed over the phone. After the
initial consultation, a detailed letter is sent immediately to the referring
physician outlining treatment plans. A similar letter summarizing treatment
results is generated following hospitalization. A
Guide to Arrhythmias, under the heading For
Healthcare Consumers, is available for your patients online. We have
provided a comprehensive look at EP testing procedures and arrhythmia treatments
in our web site pages, titled, For Our
Patients. We have also compiled
some recent articles and ongoing research trials from UCSF on arrhythmias
that you might be interested in.
Thank you for your interest in Electrophysiology Services at UCSF.
